TikTok ChromeBook Challenge--IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION!

Posted Date: 5/08/25 (9:30 PM)

Dear WUSD Families:

A concerning TikTok trend called the #ChromebookChallenge is occurring nationally and we are beginning to see incidents pop up at one of our schools and at neighboring school districts. This challenge encourages students to damage their Chromebooks, specifically by jamming objects or metal into the charging ports or the batteries. These actions can cause the computers to short out and potentially catch fire, posing a significant safety risk.

As always, student safety is our number one priority. Please talk to your child about this challenge and the risks associated. However, should something happen with your student’s Chromebook, please see the procedures below.

Emergency Procedures for Smoking/Burning Devices

If a device begins smoking or shows signs of battery failure:

  1. Do NOT touch the device with your bare hands.

  2. If possible and the device is just starting to smoke (no flames yet), carefully move it to a non-flammable surface (ideally concrete outside) using a clipboard, wooden ruler, or other non-conductive item that provides distance between you and the device. Do NOT use your hands or items that could conduct electricity or melt.

  3. If it cannot be moved outside, try to place it on a non-flammable surface.

  4. Evacuate the room/area immediately.

  5. IMPORTANT: Never use water on a battery-related fire - water makes lithium fires worse.

We also want to remind you of the costs associated with student-caused damage to Chromebooks.

  • $400: Full replacement of Chromebook (damaged beyond repair, including broken hinges, loss or theft)

  • $50: Repairs for any student-caused damage, including screen, keyboard, or removal of sticker repairs.

If a student is found to have deliberately damaged or tampered with their Chromebook in this way, they will be financially responsible for the full cost of repair or replacement and face disciplinary consequences. These consequences can include discipline up to and including expulsion and withholding of diplomas and transcripts/records until all related costs have been paid.

Your cooperation is essential in helping us maintain a safe learning environment and ensuring that all students have access to the technology they need. If students are aware of others engaging in this behavior, they are encouraged to report it immediately to a trusted adult or school administrator or by using the StopIT app.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter and for your continued partnership in fostering a safe, respectful, and supportive school community.
